G.W.Atkinson was taken prisoner and returned late from the Great War.
The War Memorial in the High Street was designed by Ninian Comper and opened in 1923. Comper also designed the East Window inn All Saints Church as a war memorial, depicting the patron saints of the countries which joined in the war against the Germans.
