Mr Wyatt, the butcher, operated in Riverside on the right. Probably 1920s Riverside (foreground) and Riverside. It is likely that the gap between them was a path leading to a ford across the River Meon Upstairs room in which the construction of the roof beams has been exposed, showing the sans purlin framework. The small hut on the left was a kiosk where a fishmonger from Winchester sold his wares once a week, then the barn of what was Coles' dairy, then the Gaite House where Coles operated his shop, then Glenthorne House. Tilbury's shop, later Adams and then Savage & Parsons is on the other side of the street. Fire Mark on Forge Sound: ‘Farmers Fire and Life Insurance Company’. In the 18th and 19th centuries, houses with insurance against fire mounted these fire marks on their outside wall, to indicate to the fire fighters employed by the insurance company that they should attempt to put the fire out. This photo was taken from outside what is now East Meon Stores and was then Aburrow's wheelwright workshop. The Institute can be seen on the right,, then Barnards Corner.
