1661 Enclosure

Enclosures of farm land in the 17th century were mainly agreed voluntarily between landowners and tenant farmers. These are details of deeds signed in 1661, many of them marked by illiterate tenant farmers with just a X. The most prominent signatory is Charles (“Caroli’) Cranley.
