High Street

East Meon High Street looking east, probably early 20th century. The small hut on the left was a kiosk where a fishmonger from Winchester sold his wares once a week, then the barn of what was Coles' dairy, then the Gaite House where Coles operated his shop, then Glenthorne House. Tilbury's shop, later Adams and then Savage & Parsons is on the other side of the street.

1910, this shows Forge Sound with white exterior, the canopy over the butcher's shop at Riverside, and Hockley Cottage, since burned down, on what is today Washer's Triangle.

What had been Thomas Adams shop in the High Street later became Savage and Parsons, then Parsons, seen here on the left. It sold groceries, wine, bread and coal Opposite was The New Inn, now the Izaak Walton.

River & High Street 1909

In 1910, a fire destroyed all the buildings in the High Street to the east of Potter's Warehouse.

It took an hour for the 'engineers' of Petersfield fire brigade to arrive, and villagers formed a human chain to feed water from the river to the blaze, with ladders onthe roof of Potter's General Warehouse.

The next day, with Petersfield Fire Brigade, Boy scouts, and policemen.

The little girl on the steps of Barnards is Hazel Goddard, now Pamplin. Herbie Goddard, her father, was dubbed 'The Mayor of East Meon'.

Flooding was common in the High Street until the 1950s.

On arrival crews from Petersfield, Droxford and Horndean found a well-developed fire, believed to have started in the chimney stack.
